Frequently Asked Questions
Who uses Triangle Ink's editing services?
Freelance translators and translation agencies, students, public relations firms, private individuals, privately-owned businesses, manufacturing/engineering companies, magazines, publishers. Basically, anyone who needs their writing improved - whether it is just a minor edit or an entire rewrite - can use Triangle Ink's services. Also, anyone that has an idea about the type of writing that they want, but is not sure how to go about creating the material or does not have the time to create it themselves can use the services of our writer.
Why do people need editors and proofreaders?
No matter how good your writing is, it is difficult to spot your own mistakes. All work can be improved by having an expert who is trained to spot grammatical errors review it.
Doesn't the spelling and grammar checker on my word processing program do a good enough job?
No. Although these tools spot many errors, they cannot replace a human when it comes to word selection or word order. They just cannot detect certain types of errors. For example, if by mistake the writer selects the wrong word but the wrong word is actually a real word and is spelled correctly, a spell checker will not find the mistake.
Why would someone translate or localise a US English document into UK English (or the reverse)?
It is true that a native UK English reader will understand a US English document. However, most native UK English readers would prefer to read UK English. Even if the spellings are in US English, at a minimum all of the US slang should be removed from the document. For example, often when using the web, native UK English readers will avoid sites that are written completely in US English if there is a viable alternative available to them in UK English.
Are there any websites where I can learn more about proofreading and editing?
Yes. The Society for Editors and Proofreaders is one of our favourites.
